Monday, May 20, 2019 - 2:13 PM

On Monday 20th May, coinciding with National Volunteers Week, the Volunteer of the Year Awards were launched by the WA Football Commission. The Volunteer of the Year Awards provide a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the amazing work done by football volunteers all around the country and to recognise their incredible achievements and service to the game.

The WAFC, in conjunction with the AFL, will be presenting awards to volunteers in the following categories:

  • Optus WA Football Volunteer of the Year
  • NAB AFL Auskick Volunteer
  • AFL Diversity Ambassador
  • AFL Primary School Ambassador
  • AFL Secondary School Ambassador
  • AFL All Abilities Volunteer
  • Go for 2&5 AFL Junior Coach of the Year
  • Senior Coach of the Year

The Optus WA Football Volunteer of the Year Award supported by The Sunday Times, is the major award. It is awarded to the volunteer deemed to have made the most outstanding overall contribution to WA Football. Finalists will be invited to attend the 2019 WAFL Sandover Medal Count and the overall winner will receive a trip for two to the 2019 AFL Grand Final, including flights and accommodation. There will also be weekly prizes from Optus for some of our nominees during the registration period.

Last season, North Beach JFC's Kerryn Edwards (photographed) flew the flag for Claremont, as the District's Volunteer of the Year nominee.

Kerryn has been a volunteer at North Beach Junior Football Club since 2014. She has made a measurable impact over the past four years to growing the club as a passionate advocate for all things AFL and of course all things North Beach.  Her volunteer roles are as varied and as numerous as her skills and Kerryn goes about them in an efficient, competent and prompt manner. Apart from roles on the committee she is also involved on game day as manager of her son’s football team and organizes club functions such as presentations and quiz nights.

Since 2015, Kerryn has been the Registrar at North Beach JFC. Kerryn has an amazing attention to detail and a ‘no-fuss’, ‘can-do’ attitude which makes her exactly the right person to be holding down the role of club Registrar. During Kerryn’s time as Registrar, North Beach JFC has grown to be the biggest club in the Claremont district with over 770 members. In the last two years, Kerryn has played a critical role in the growth of girls football at North Beach JFC. On a daily basis Kerryn will diligently answer up to 30 emails regarding team nominations, fixturing issues, player registration, transfers in and out of the club, player game counts, Kidsport applications, name changes, team changes and other incidental items over and above what her role calls for.

Kerryn is a great ambassador for the Claremont District and upholds the qualities the Football Commission is looking for from a Volunteer of the Year.

Football clubs and schools across Western Australia are strongly encouraged to submit nominations and recognise their volunteers for their hard work and dedication. Nominations close on Friday July 26th.
